Y25 Bogie Spectrum Analysis
Type: Undergraduate project
Problem
Evaluating forces on rail bogies traditionally requires full dynamic simulations, which are computationally expensive and time-consuming during the design phase.
What Was Novel
I applied SRSS (Square Root of Sum of Squares) and CQC (Complete Quadratic Combination) spectrum methods, borrowed from earthquake engineering, to the rail bogie domain. These methods estimate peak dynamic forces from modal analysis results without running time-domain simulations.
Combined with finite element analysis and experimental validation data, this approach produced force estimates within 5% of full dynamic simulation results at a fraction of the computational cost.
