Magnetic Electron Lens for TEM

Type: Undergraduate project (3 months)

Overview

Designed and manufactured a magnetic electron lens for a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM). The lens focuses electron beams to produce atomic-scale images of specimens.

What I Did

  • Designed the magnetic circuit (pole pieces, coil geometry, yoke) to produce a precisely shaped magnetic field
  • Optimized the lens geometry for minimal spherical and chromatic aberration
  • Oversaw manufacturing to the tight tolerances required for TEM optics

The project gave me hands-on experience with electromagnetic design, precision manufacturing, and the physics of charged particle optics.
